The Massacre of the Innocents at Bethlehem, by Pál Szinyei Merse, 1866
Prayer in Sorrow
God of all consolation,
in your unending love and mercy for us,
you turn the darkness of death
into the dawn of new life.
Show compassion to your people in sorrow.
Be our refuge and our strength to lift us
from the darkness of this grief
to peace and joy in your presence.
We ask this through Christ, our Lord.
“At this Christmas when Christ comes, will He find a warm heart? Mark the season of Advent by loving and serving the others with God’s own love and concern.”
St. Teresa of Calcutta
Prayers for Lighting the Advent Wreath Candles
From A Prayer Book of Catholic Devotions
God of power and mercy open our hearts in welcome. Remove the things that hinder us from receiving Christ with joy so that we may share his wisdom and become one with him when he comes in glory, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
St. Ambrose, by Matthias Stom, first half of 17th century
“Mercy is a good thing, for it makes men perfect, in that it imitates the perfect Father.
Nothing graces the Christian soul so much as mercy.”
